European Triathlon Championships 2024: Vichy Hosts the Grand Finale
This weekend, the 2024 European Triathlon Championships come to a thrilling conclusion in Vichy, France. The event features a fast and flat course, a stark contrast to last year’s mountainous Madrid race. Competitors will start with a river swim before tackling a seven-lap bike ride and a three-lap run, set to test their speed and endurance across straight, power-focused stretches.
The Men’s Battle for Glory
Hungary’s Csongor Lehmann leads the men’s field and arrives in top form after securing a WTCS medal earlier this year. He will face fierce competition from Spain’s David Cantero del Campo, who recently claimed his second consecutive Valencia World Cup victory, and Hugo Milner from Great Britain, a rising star with a World Cup win in Miyazaki. Milner’s strength as a runner, combined with Cantero’s speed, promises an intense race, with Lehmann hoping to add a continental title to his decorated career.
Norway’s triathlon powerhouse, Casper Stornes, also enters the race after a silver medal at the Karlovy Vary World Cup. His compatriot, Vetle Bergsvik Thorn, fresh off his European Games victory, joins the competition alongside World Cup podium finishers Yanis Seguin (FRA) and Valentin Morlec (FRA). With such a strong field, the men’s race is set to be unpredictable and fiercely competitive.
Women’s Race: Home Favorite Takes Center Stage
The spotlight in the women’s race shines on Leonie Periault of France, who enters as the top contender following her WTCS Yokohama victory. Periault, known for her exceptional running skills, is poised to finally claim her first individual European title on home soil. She faces strong competition, particularly from Alice Betto (ITA), who steps up in place of the withdrawn Bianca Seregni.
Germany’s Selina Klamt, the 2023 U23 World Champion, and Portugal’s Maria Tomé, fresh off a strong Olympic showing, are also key challengers. Meanwhile, Vicky Holland (GBR), a former world champion, will be seeking to add another title to her illustrious career before retiring. Her compatriot Jessica Fullagar, with her outstanding cycling prowess, could also shake up the race dynamics.
An Exciting Conclusion to the 2024 Season
With a flat, fast course designed for power, the Vichy championships promise to be one of the most exciting triathlon events of the season. Whether it’s seasoned pros or rising stars, the competition in both the men’s and women’s races will be fierce, making this a must-watch event to close out the 2024 triathlon season.
